Breaking Free From Bondage

by Pastor Dean A. Brown

I woke up at 3:52AM with this question on my mind:

“HOW DOES A PERSON BREAK FREE FROM A CYCLE OF BEHAVIOR THAT SEEMS TO HAVE THEM IN BONDAGE?”

I began to wonder if there was a spirit related to the behavior that binds a person or could it be classified as a messenger of satan that is buffeting.

I dozed of to sleep with my mind still pondering the question. I was not fully asleep but more asleep than awake, when I had what seemed like a dream. I saw this person, a male, who had struggled mightily to overcome something (I don’t know exactly what it was) that was extremely difficult and he was asked how he was able to overcome it. He answered “PERSISTENCE.”

Immediately after, I heard words being spoken in my spirit. I do not remember the exact wording but it had to do with THE MOUTH. I heard in my spirit that what a person keeps speaking of they stay bound by and that the words of the mouth has to change.

I woke up with the realization that I had received answers to the question.

1. PERSISTENCE

2. THE MOUTH: WHAT ONE SPEAKS ABOUT.

PERSISTENCE speaks of continuous pursuit. It speaks to the repeating of positive behavior until it takes root. Paul in Galatians 6:9 tells us not to be weary in doing good because in due season we will reap if we do not give up. Paul speaks to this issue also in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NKJV) when he said “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” Another verse that speaks to the power of persistence is Proverbs 12:27. The Good News translation reads “If you are lazy, you will never get what you are after, but if you work hard, you will get a fortune.”

THE MOUTH as I perceive it in my spirit is either an instrument of bondage or one of freedom. If a person is constantly speaking of the problem  in such ways as talking of doing it, repeatedly joking about it, for example, then the mouth becomes a tool that help to keep a person ensnared by the wrong behavior. As I’m writing this I heard these words “THE MOUTH GIVES EXPRESSION TO THE THOUGHTS OF THE HEART.” This would mean that whatever a person is constantly thinking of they will eventually speak. If a person wants to use their mouth as an instrument of freedom, they need to change their thinking (Philippians 4:8; Romans 12:1-2) so as to change their speaking. Just as what one thinks on eventually takes root in the heart and manifested in behavior, the same is true for what a person consistently speaks. It too will eventually take root in the heart and manifest itself in a person’s behavior.

No matter how tough the fight, don’t quit. Keep pressing until you change your thinking, your speaking and ultimately your behavior. Make the words of Pastor Kenneth W. Hagin your confession, “I cannot be defeated and I will not quit.”

I definitely believe that there is a spirit that is related to certain obstacles that we don’t seem to be able to overcome and that those spirits are here to buffet us. But I also believe that we need to be more conscious of our words and realize that there is power in our words for the good or for the bad. We live in a negative society which is geared towards our making negative confessions. That seems to come so easily and it actually takes fore thought to think and speak positively and speak what the Word says. Every so often I have to remind myself to speak what the Word says, and that no matter how tempting it is to make the wrong confession, to stifle it! The old adage that my mother taught me is true and can be used in this instance too. “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

Thank you for letting the Holy Spirit speak through you. I truly believe my life is better because of what I speak and think over my life. I decree and declare, ” I cannot be defeated and I will not quit.” Blessings Always.

Amen, I like this post because it explains that when working to a goal positive thinking is pertinent but so is the work/training one puts into it.
    Thanks for the word.
